Politics and Religion
Reading Genesis 11 this week and am reminded of some thoughts.
Genesis 1:28 (NASB)
God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 9:1 (NASB)
And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
Genesis 11:1-9 (LEB)
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as people migrated from the east they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to each other, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone and they had tar for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top reaches to the heavens. And let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
Then Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower that humankind was building. And Yahweh said, “Behold, they are one people with one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. So now nothing that they intend to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand each other’s language.” So Yahweh scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, for there Yahweh confused the language of the whole earth, and there Yahweh scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

It seems God always wanted to spread us out and encourage us to rely on Him and not to hope in our collective ability.
So often on FB, the news and in conversation I hear us talking about what life would be like if only "we could...".
Two extremes both wrong. Whether you believe we can do it together or leave me alone, I'll handle my own life by myself, both are disastrous and void of the obedience, reliance and submission to our God Creator and Author of Life, Peace and Civility.
I am all for civil discourse and for advocating for political and policy decisions that are consistent with God's truth. We should strongly support His way of thinking. It is our duty.
The focus needs to be on Him.
Personally, I think I government is way too big, our debt outrageously out of control and we have stacks, reams and volumes of laws, but are still financially and morally bankrupt. As long as hearts are far from Him, you won't be able to write enough laws, build enough consensus or add enough protections to make a thimbles worth of difference. However at the rate we're going we better turn up the legislation printing press. The answer is a lot more of Him.
That is all.
