The 9th of Av Begins Today
"Tisha b'Av, commemorates a list of catastrophes so severe it's clearly a day set aside by God for suffering." (source) This day of dread and disaster begins at sunset in Israel (7:25 local time, 12:25 EDT) through sunset tomorrow.
What makes this day so significant in the timetable? Here are some of the events that have occurred:
1. Jews reject the report of Joshua and Caleb and cry to go back to Egypt effectively sentencing them to 38 more years in the desert.
2. The first and second temples were destroyed on the 9th of Av.
3. The Jews were expelled from England (1290 AD) and Spain (1492 AD).
4. WWI declared on the 9th of Av which many historians site as the beginning of the destabilized world that created the conditions for the Holocaust.

(Authors personal note - in 2013 I read for the first time about this significant day. I began to find the corresponding Gregorian Calendar dates and discovered to my shock that several of the worst events of my life occurred on this exact date. It was chilling.)
